Neuropsychological vs Psychological

Evaluations

A psychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that may include cognitive, academic, behavioral, and/or developmental testing. This process can help identify learning differences like dyslexia, attention problems such as ADHD, emotional concerns like anxiety and depression, or developmental conditions like the autism spectrum.

While we do not currently offer neuropsychological evaluations, it’s important to note that they often use many of the same tools as psychoeducational evaluations—such as cognitive tests or academic tests (e.g., Wechsler academic achievement tests) or developmental assessments (e.g., Autism diagnostic assessments)—the difference often lies in the provider’s training and focus. Neuropsychological evaluations approach the results primarily through a brain-based medical lens, which can be helpful for understanding certain co-occurring medical conditions, specifically neurological conditions.

We incorporate a biopsychosocial approach that considers how thinking and cognitive skills and abilities, emotions, relationships, and life experiences interact. For example, a child’s anxiety might not only be related to memory, but also to ongoing stressors at home or school like a really challenging classroom environment or limited effective academic interventions. This more holistic perspective can guide recommendations that may include parent support, therapy, school accommodations, and other interventions.

Dr. John Hite’s Process

Dr. Hite’s evaluation process is designed to be thoughtful, thorough, and paced with care—typically taking about two months from the initial referral to the delivery of the final report.

Our evaluation process is designed to be thoughtful, thorough, and supportive every step of the way. We begin with a 60–90 minute parent intake—this is a time for us to get to know your child through your eyes, and we ask that all relevant reports be shared ahead of time.

From there, we’ll observe your child in their classroom and connect with their teacher either before or after the assessment. The assessment itself typically takes 4–10 hours, depending on your child’s unique needs.

Once everything is complete, it usually takes about four weeks for the report to be ready. We’ll then meet with you to walk through the results together, offering individualized recommendations and supports tailored to your child.

  • Dr. Hite holds graduate degrees in school psychology and special education. Prior to his work as a school psychologist, he served as a special education consultant and teacher in early childhood and elementary settings.

He completed APA- and NASP-accredited training programs in school psychology. His clinical training was completed at Maine Medical Center’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a Tufts School of Medicine training program, and the Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Hite brings a unique perspective to our work as a former special education teacher—his deep understanding of classroom dynamics and learning differences helps shape every part of our process.

Our reports are intentionally clear, concise, and strengths-based, highlighting not just areas of need but also what makes each child shine. In addition to comprehensive evaluations, we offer classroom observations, educational advocacy, and ongoing follow-up to ensure your child is truly supported in both home and school environments.

  • Consultations with Dr. Hite are thoughtful, individualized, and grounded in both warmth and clinical expertise.

His comprehensive approach weaves together psychological, educational, and behavioral assessment tools, along with interviews, observations, and collateral review. Feedback is shared in a clear, collaborative manner—designed to empower families with practical, evidence-based recommendations that are both relevant and actionable.

Dr. Hite’s consultations center on understanding concerns related to children’s learning, development, and behavior. His evaluations often inform treatment planning and educational decision-making. He also supports parents navigating the special education system and helps families access services through public and private schools, as well as specialized therapeutic placements.

As needed, we’re also happy to join teacher meetings, IEPs, or provide additional guidance to help you and your child feel supported moving forward.

  • Families often come to us when their child is:

    • Excelling in certain areas but struggling in others

    • Having a hard time keeping up academically despite effort

    • Experiencing attention, emotional, or behavioral challenges

    • Demonstrating unique strengths that may indicate giftedness

    • Navigating developmental changes or concerns

A thorough evaluation helps clarify what’s happening and why—so the next steps are informed, compassionate, and effective.

  • For families seeking continued support, a follow up consultation is available. This may include meetings with teachers, therapists, and other providers to ensure recommendations are well understood and effectively implemented.
