Dr. John Hite is a school psychologist with over 20 years of experience providing psychological and educational services for children, adolescents, and families with complex developmental, learning, and emotional needs. At Arbit Counseling, he provides collaborative care, comprehensive evaluations, and tailored consultation to help children thrive.
Dr. Hite specializes in psychological evaluation and developmental consultation for children ages two and up. His areas of expertise include the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, ADHD, and learning disorders like dyslexia, as well as emotional and behavioral concerns like anxiety and depression that affect functioning at home and in school.
With a strengths-based, research-informed approach, Dr. Hite is committed to translating assessment findings into practical, meaningful support for families, educators, and other providers. Dr. Hite provides psychoeducational evaluations at Arbit Counseling D.C. Office as a licensed psychology associate under the supervision of Dr. Anna Rosch, PsyD.
Separately, Dr. Hite provides special education consulting services in his role as an education consultant. These services are done via telehealth nationally and internationally, and in person in Washington, DC.
In addition to his clinical and consulting work, Dr. Hite holds a Clinical Teaching Faculty appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Maine Medical Center. He teaches child psychiatry residents and fellows and lectures in pediatrics. Dr. Hite has strong interests in evidence-based assessment and treatment of developmental challenges, accessible communication, and the translation of research into clinical and educational practice.

Psychological & Psychoeducational Evaluations
A psychological or psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment designed to understand a child’s learning, attention, behavior, emotions, and development. Psychological evaluations are often more focused on emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns, while psychoeducational evaluations are typically more focused on academic skills and school-related concerns such as reading, writing, and math difficulties. Depending on the referral question, the evaluation may include cognitive, academic, behavioral, developmental, and social-emotional measures.
These evaluations can help clarify concerns such as dyslexia and other learning difficulties, ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism-related developmental differences, and school-related challenges. The goal is not only to identify a diagnosis when appropriate, but also to explain what the child needs and what supports are most likely to help. Our evaluations use a biopsychosocial approach, which means we consider how cognitive skills, academic development, emotions, relationships, instruction, and life experiences interact. For example, a child’s learning or attention difficulties may be influenced by skill gaps, anxiety, classroom demands, inconsistent intervention, stress at home or school, or a combination of factors.
Many psychological, psychoeducational, developmental, and neuropsychological evaluations use overlapping tools, including cognitive, academic, behavioral, and developmental assessments. The difference often lies in the referral question and the lens used to interpret the results. Neuropsychological evaluations may be especially helpful when there are complex neurological or medical concerns. Our evaluations focus on understanding the child’s functioning across home, school, and developmental contexts and translating that information into practical recommendations.
Recommendations may include school accommodations, targeted academic interventions, therapy, parent support, developmental services, or additional referrals when needed.

Dr. Hite’s evaluation process is designed to be thoughtful, thorough, and paced with care—typically taking about two months from the initial referral to the delivery of the final report.
Our evaluation process is designed to be thoughtful, thorough, and supportive every step of the way. We begin with a 60–90 minute parent intake—this is a time for us to get to know your child through your eyes, and we ask that all relevant reports be shared ahead of time.
From there, we’ll observe your child in their classroom and connect with their teacher either before or after the assessment. The assessment itself typically takes 4–10 hours, depending on your child’s unique needs.
Once everything is complete, it usually takes about four weeks for the report to be ready. We’ll then meet with you to walk through the results together, offering individualized recommendations and supports tailored to your child.

Dr. Hite holds graduate degrees in school psychology and special education. Prior to his work as a school psychologist, he served as a special education consultant and teacher in early childhood and elementary settings.
He completed APA- and NASP-accredited training programs in school psychology. His clinical training was completed at Maine Medical Center’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a Tufts School of Medicine training program, and the Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Hite brings a unique perspective to our work as a former special education teacher—his deep understanding of classroom dynamics and learning differences helps shape every part of our process.
