ADHD In Adults

Unlike children, adults are expected to have it all together, manage complex responsibilities, and successfully juggle family, friendships, and career.

Adult ADHD & The High-Functioning Mask

Expectations cause widespread misunderstanding of adult ADHD, unfairly labeling those suffering as lazy or unmotivated, and leaving them feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and isolated.

We recognize the many ways that adult ADHD can impact life, affecting everything from household chores to boardroom presentations and influencing everything from self-worth to physical health. Whether you were diagnosed as a child or just now connecting the dots, the Arbit ADHD Center provides clinical expertise, neuro-affirming support, and person-centered care designed to help you stop merely surviving and start thriving.

Adult ADHD is often accompanied by a high-functioning mask that allows the sufferer to appear calm, composed, and “put together” on the outside while they struggle internally. Masking, which involves a collection of coping strategies, can leave those with ADHD undiagnosed and unsupported.

At the Arbit ADHD Center, we specialize in helping adults remove the mask, a goal especially challenging for the newly diagnosed who are still learning to manage their challenges in proactive ways. We focus on practical executive functioning tools and recognizing even subtle symptoms, including the difference between being busy and being “ADHD busy.” While busyness comes with adulthood, ADHD busy goes beyond simple productivity, muddying the waters with self-criticism, perfectionism, and mental overload.
